Tan Xue Ting

Xue Ting specialises in shipping, admiralty and international trade law, and is dual-qualified in Singapore and England and Wales.

Xue Ting regularly acts for trading houses, shipowners, charterers, P&I clubs and insurers in international trade disputes, charterparty disputes, shipbuilding disputes, cargo and contamination disputes, vessel arrests and insolvency litigation. Xue Ting is very familiar with the dispute resolution process, having appeared in the Singapore High Court and Court of Appeal and represented clients in institutional (SIAC, SCMA and GAFTA) and ad hoc arbitrations as well as mediations.

Xue Ting has also represented clients in commercial, corporate and civil litigation disputes before the Singapore Courts.

Xue Ting has also undertaken secondments to support the crude and products trading and supply business of an oil major and the FD&D team of an IG P&I club. With her experience, she is able to understand her clients’ practical and commercial considerations and provide them with sensible and targeted advice to resolve their problems.

Representative matters

Shipping, Admiralty and Marine Insurance

  • Represented shipowners in obtaining a stay of the Singapore admiralty proceedings and in procuring the return of their security following from a collision in China. Successfully argued novel issues arising from the differences in limitation regimes between Singapore (as an LLMC 1976 signatory) and China (as a non-LLMC signatory).
  • Represented a crane manufacturer in an SIAC arbitration concerning the construction, sale and purchase of first-in-the-world fibre rope cranes for offshore use.
  • Represented shipowners on claims arising from a fire incident onboard a container vessel.
  • Represented vessel interests in a collision action.
  • Represented shipowners in oil contamination claims arising from a time charter.
  • Represented shipowners in charterparty disputes following the closure of Indian ports due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Advised shipowners on a charterparty dispute, including LMAA arbitration and managing vessel arrest proceedings brought in Malaysia.
  • Represented a director of a shipping agency in defending against claims of cargo fraud and conspiracy brought by a freight forwarder.
  • Represented cargo interests in obtaining a release of cargo loaded on board a vessel which was subsequently arrested in Singapore.
  • Represented an offshore construction company in an ad hoc arbitration concerning the supply of materials for several rig-building projects.
  • Represented a shipyard in defending against charges brought under the Workplace Safety and Health Act.
  • Advised a shipping company on a dispute relating to the exercise of purchase options under bareboat charterparties.

International Trade

  • Represented a Chinese state-owned energy trading company in the wake of one of the largest financial collapse of a major oil trading company and tanker fleet operator, leading to large exposures to the client. Advising the client on various aspects of interpleader proceedings and on the implications of related insolvency proceedings.
  • Represented a coal trading company in a High Court trial concerning the non-performance of a coal sale agreement.
  • Represented a bunker trading company in a claim arising out of a bunker sleeving arrangement for a substantial amount of bunkers that went missing.
  • Acting for a bunker trading company in claims for breach of a bunker barging contract, conversion and conspiracy.
  • Acting for palm oil traders in contamination and non-performance disputes with their buyers.
  • Advised coal traders on Russian sanctions.

Commercial and Company

  • Represented a construction company in contractual claims against its contractor in relation to school building projects.
  • Represented an engineering company in a contractual dispute with its former joint venture partner.
  • Represented a director in a High Court trial regarding the transfer of shares in a family company.
  • Advised creditors on various insolvency and judicial management proceedings.
